Seven Seas of Rye Rehearsing

Seven Seas of Rye is the place that bohemians and other misfits that do not abide by Globalsoft rules are cast away to, to slowly rot away in existence. The song in WWRY is the scene where Khashoggi is creating havoc among the bohemians as he banishes them there and messes with their minds, to become nothing but brainwashed individuals.

Using a starting phrase created by Kat, we began practising it to the soundtrack to analyse our moods and feelings in the song. The dance begins with the bohemians running across and around the stage, trying to escape their fate. The following actions and movements all depict being controlled whilst trying to break free and eventually becoming conditioned. We needed to ensure we had punchy and sometimes heavy dynamics, to illustrate being almost flung around by Khashoggi's force of terror. We practised by evaluating each other in groups, giving feedback on what we can improve and what we did well. This was useful as I could also compare myself to other people dancing to see what they do well that I need to improve on.

Over more rehearsals, this was our strongest dance phrase in the whole performance. It is an overall fun hyper number that you can fully invest your characterisation into. As we added more movement, we made sure to recap so everyone in the ensemble knew the correct actions/dynamics/transitions. When we introduced contact work, we paired up with our partner in WWRY and our double cast. As Holly and Luke went first, they created a short duet that was then taught to us. Their patience in teaching us how the steps strengthened our skills as an ensemble as it is about working as a team and not just for yourself.

When we started practising with the band and vocals, there was some initial difficulty in the timing with Khashoggi (Jordy's) vocals and the accompaniment. This made us lose focus and became challenging as our strongest performance had now many issues we needed to sort. However we needed to use patience and respect of others, as not everyone has the same strengths, confidence etc. as you.
