Ogre battle rehearsing

When rehearsing the ogre battle, we discussed how we wanted to incorporate frantic running movement to fit with the fast electric sounds of the guitar and heavy hitting beat of the drums in the soundtrack music. It needed to show overwhelming conflict between the police and the bohemians. We wanted to use slow motion sections in the piece, which we then thought of a back and forth movement between slow and fast motion. This would include running, ducking, dodging in the fast section, and punches/attacks in the slow section. This is effective as by slowing down the speed, it emphasises intensity of the scene.

In contribution, as I am good with finding and setting counts I created a structure for the ogre battle so that all actors were synchronised with each other in terms of pace.
Count pattern:

  • 1st 8 counts in slow motion
  • 2nd 8 counts in fast motion (running)
You would find a new partner every other in the slow motion counts and perform a fight action e.g a punch to the face/dodging strikes. Deciding to set the number of counts made the process smoother helping organise the fighting scene, as we don't want it to be dangerous and risk people colliding etc.

We found when running this scene later that we need to be more aggressive with a higher state of tension (6), as at the moment we are being too wary about running through and around each other. We need to be more confident and spatially aware at the same time. If we all feel this way equally, then the movement would be smoother and fluid as we won't be hesitating and disrupting the performance.
